New Delhi, Oct 10 (TheTrendingPeople.com): Colombia’s Ambassador to India, Victor Hugo Echeverri Jaramillo, has expressed optimism about the deepening ties between India and Colombia, describing both nations as “reliable partners” in a world increasingly defined by economic uncertainty and geopolitical change.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Jaramillo underscored the importance of trust and collaboration in global trade and stressed that India and Colombia share both mutual respect and complementary economic strengths that can drive their partnership forward.
“We have significant opportunities nowadays, especially at this time when there is a global trade war marked by tariffs. We need reliable partners, and I believe India and Colombia have great potential in this regard,” he said.
Strong Economic Links and Expanding Trade
According to Ambassador Jaramillo, bilateral trade between India and Colombia currently stands at around $4.7 billion per year, reflecting a steady rise in commercial engagement. Of this, Colombia exports goods worth over $3 billion to India, while India’s exports total around $1.4 billion annually.
He pointed out that Indian companies have established a growing presence in Colombia, particularly in pharmaceuticals, three-wheelers, information technology, and services, while Colombia mainly exports energy products such as oil and thermal coal to India.
“This shows that our economies are complementary, giving us scope to enhance cooperation further. In terms of investment, we are pleased to have major Indian companies investing in Colombia,” Jaramillo added.
This complementary trade structure provides fertile ground for expanded collaboration across emerging sectors such as renewable energy, biotechnology, agribusiness, and digital services, where both nations can share expertise and resources.
Colombia’s Strategic Trade Advantage
Jaramillo also emphasized Colombia’s potential as a gateway to the Latin American market. With its network of free trade agreements (FTAs) granting access to over 1.5 billion consumers worldwide, Colombia offers Indian companies a strong base to expand operations across the region.
“Colombia’s network of free trade agreements provides access to over 1.5 billion consumers globally. This is a huge opportunity for Indian companies to set up operations in Colombia and benefit from this network,” the Ambassador said.
He noted that Colombia has become an attractive investment destination due to its stable economy, business-friendly policies, and strategic geographic position, which connects North and South America.
Political Engagement and Diplomatic Milestones
Highlighting the importance of high-level political exchanges, Ambassador Jaramillo cited several landmark visits that have significantly strengthened the bilateral partnership between New Delhi and Bogotá.
“In April 2023, we had the honour of hosting India’s Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar — the first-ever visit by an Indian Foreign Minister to Colombia. It was a landmark event, and since then, we have been developing a constructive agenda together,” he said.
Following that historic visit, P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, also traveled to Colombia, further enhancing diplomatic engagement. Additionally, two Colombian vice ministers have visited India in recent years, underlining the growing importance both countries place on the partnership.
These visits have paved the way for multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in key sectors, including trade, science and technology, and cultural cooperation.
Cultural and Educational Exchange
Beyond trade and diplomacy, Ambassador Jaramillo emphasized the expanding cultural and educational ties between India and Colombia. He particularly mentioned collaboration through India’s ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation) programme, which has helped train Colombian professionals in diverse fields ranging from IT and engineering to governance.
He also highlighted emerging cooperation in the audiovisual and creative industries, following a recent agreement encouraging joint film and media productions between Indian and Colombian companies.
“Our bilateral ties are growing not only in politics and trade but also in culture and cooperation,” Jaramillo said, expressing optimism about future exchanges in art, cinema, and tourism.
Complementary Strengths: A Win-Win Partnership
Both India and Colombia have diversified economies with strong global connections. India’s expertise in information technology, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy complements Colombia’s strengths in natural resources, agriculture, and energy production.
Experts believe that collaboration between the two countries can lead to sustainable growth, technological innovation, and deeper cultural understanding. The two democracies also share a commitment to multilateralism, peace, and inclusive development, making their partnership strategically significant in today’s volatile global order.
Looking Ahead: Building on Momentum
Ambassador Jaramillo’s remarks come at a time when global trade dynamics are shifting rapidly, with countries seeking to diversify supply chains and establish trust-based partnerships. India’s expanding engagement with Latin America—particularly with Colombia—is increasingly viewed as a key component of its global outreach strategy.
The ambassador also pointed out that Colombia is eager to host new Indian investments in manufacturing, green energy, and infrastructure, while Colombian businesses are exploring opportunities in India’s growing consumer market.
Industry analysts expect bilateral trade to cross the $5 billion mark soon, driven by stronger commercial frameworks, new MoUs, and private-sector collaboration.
