Hyderabad, August 3: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud and AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan will depart for New Delhi on Monday via a special train, accompanied by a delegation of Backward Classes (BC) leaders. The delegation will participate in a protest at Jantar Mantar on August 6, demanding Presidential assent to the Backward Classes Reservation Bills passed by the Telangana Assembly.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will spearhead the dharna in the national capital, as part of the Congress party’s assertive push for 42% reservation for BCs in Telangana. The protest is part of a broader three-day agitation plan, with demonstrations scheduled from August 5 to 7.
Push for Social Justice
The protest highlights the Congress government's recent efforts to enhance representation for BCs and marginalized communities through legislative reforms. The Telangana Assembly had recently passed Bills proposing 42% reservations for BCs, a move that awaits Presidential approval.
Speaking on the occasion, Meenakshi Natarajan emphasized that the protest is aimed at securing constitutional backing for social justice reforms in Telangana. “We are taking this fight to the national level to ensure that the voices of the backward and marginalized are heard and acted upon,” she said.
Janahita Padayatra Continues in Adilabad
Meanwhile, the Janahita Padayatra, led by Mahesh Kumar Goud and Meenakshi Natarajan, continued its momentum in Adilabad district. During a roadside address in Khanapur on Sunday evening, Natarajan said the march was inspired by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, which sought to unify India against divisive politics.
“This padayatra represents the Congress’s core philosophy—social justice, inclusive development, and upliftment of the marginalized,” she said. Taking a direct swipe at the BJP, she accused the ruling party at the Centre of propagating divisive politics and ignoring the welfare of backward communities.
Flagship Welfare Initiatives in Telangana
Highlighting the Telangana government's developmental initiatives, Natarajan pointed to a range of welfare schemes aimed at ensuring inclusive growth. She cited the distribution of title deeds to tribal farmers under the Recognition of Forest Rights (RoFR) Act as a landmark move in tribal empowerment.
The Congress-led government in Telangana, she added, has taken significant steps to uplift tribal and backward sections of society, with the 42% BC reservation Bills being a crucial milestone.
Senior Leaders Join the Cause
The protest campaign has seen the participation of several key ministers and leaders. Minister for Tribal Welfare D. Anasuya (Seethakka), Minister for Excise and Prohibition Jupally Krishna Rao, and other senior Congress functionaries have joined the movement, reflecting a united front within the party for securing reservation rights.
As the Telangana Congress intensifies its pressure on the Centre, all eyes are on the developments in Delhi, where the August 6 dharna is expected to draw significant national attention.
