Wang Yi Meets PM Modi, Hands Over Xi Jinping’s Invitation
New Delhi, Aug 19 (TheTrendingPeople.com):
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday in New Delhi, handing over a message and invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, later this month.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, briefed the Prime Minister on his two-day visit to India, which included bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives co-chaired with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
PM Modi Welcomes Progress in India–China Ties
Following the meeting, PM Modi took to X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other's interests and sensitivities. I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity.”
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) also released a statement highlighting that Modi had welcomed the “steady and positive progress” in ties since his last meeting with Xi, including the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
Emphasis on Border Peace and Stability
During the discussions, PM Modi reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity on the India–China border, stressing that a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue remains vital for the stability of the relationship.
The PMO statement noted:
“The Prime Minister underlined that stable, predictable, and constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional and global peace and prosperity.”
A Delicate Balance in Bilateral Relations
The meeting comes at a sensitive time in India–China relations. While both sides have been working to restore diplomatic momentum after tensions in recent years, unresolved border disputes in Ladakh continue to weigh heavily on trust.
By attending the SCO Summit in Tianjin, PM Modi is set to meet President Xi Jinping again, offering another platform for dialogue. Analysts view this as a key opportunity to consolidate strategic stability in South Asia, particularly amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
Final Thoughts from TheTrendingPeople.com
PM Modi’s acceptance of Xi Jinping’s invitation for the SCO Summit marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to stabilise India–China relations. With the focus on mutual respect, resumed people-to-people exchanges, and the shared goal of regional peace, the Tianjin meeting could set the stage for cautiously improving ties between Asia’s two largest powers.
However, the unresolved border question remains the ultimate test of whether this renewed diplomatic engagement can translate into long-term stability.
