Vaiko Rules Out Coalition Government, Predicts Absolute Majority for DMK in 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls
With political momentum building ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko has confidently declared that the ruling DMK will secure an absolute majority, eliminating the need for any coalition government in the state.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Vaiko affirmed that the people of Tamil Nadu would reject the idea of a coalition, instead offering a clear mandate to continue the Dravidian model of governance under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
"No Coalition, Only Dravidian Rule": Vaiko
Dismissing any speculation about a hung Assembly, Vaiko emphasized that Tamil Nadu voters will not accept a fractured mandate or coalition leadership.
“The people of the State will not accept such an idea. A coalition government is neither desirable nor necessary. DMK will win an absolute majority in 2026,” he said.
He underscored his party's firm commitment to the DMK alliance and declared that M.K. Stalin will lead Tamil Nadu once again, continuing the policies under the Dravidian model.
MDMK Reaffirms Alliance with DMK to Fight "Communal Forces"
Vaiko explained that the MDMK’s continued alliance with the DMK was the result of intensive consultations with party decision-making bodies.
“The alliance aims to stop communal forces led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP, and the RSS from gaining a foothold in Tamil Nadu,” he asserted.
Vaiko stressed that the MDMK remains unwavering in its anti-BJP and anti-Hindutva stance, and would work diligently to ensure the DMK alliance’s victory in 2026.
Slams Amit Shah’s NDA Claim as “Unrealistic”
Vaiko was also quick to respond to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent claim that the NDA would form the government in Tamil Nadu, dismissing the statement as baseless and politically irrelevant.
“Amit Shah is a person to be sidelined in Indian politics. He is a backbone of the Hindutva forces. The people of Tamil Nadu will never accept that vision,” Vaiko said, sharply criticizing the BJP’s attempts to grow its base in the Dravidian heartland.
He further remarked that the electorate would overwhelmingly support the DMK alliance, a development Shah would be forced to witness post-election.
Clarifies Remarks on Past Alliance with AIADMK
When questioned about his earlier comments regarding a possible alignment with the AIADMK, which drew backlash from the opposition party, Vaiko stood his ground.
“I only stated that it was a mistake to align with AIADMK in the past. That alliance led to my unjust imprisonment for 19 months under the POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act),” he clarified.
However, he was careful to draw a distinction between political criticism and personal attacks, adding that he had never spoken ill of AIADMK icons like M.G. Ramachandran or Jayalalithaa.
The Political Mood in Tamil Nadu: DMK vs NDA
The stage is slowly being set for a high-stakes political battle in Tamil Nadu. While the DMK-led alliance continues to project stability and progress under Stalin, the NDA is attempting to break into a state where Hindutva politics has historically struggled to gain traction.
Political analysts suggest that the DMK’s performance in governance, including its welfare schemes and efforts in social justice, will likely shape the voter mood.
On the other hand, the BJP and its NDA allies are relying on national issues, ideological campaigns, and targeted outreach to make inroads.
Our Final Thoughts
As Tamil Nadu gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections, Vaiko’s statement underscores the confidence of the ruling alliance and highlights the ongoing political polarisation between Dravidian and Hindutva forces in the state.
With the MDMK doubling down on its support for the DMK and warning against the rise of “communal politics,” it’s clear that the next year will witness a fierce ideological and electoral battle. Whether Tamil Nadu voters will deliver a decisive mandate as predicted remains to be seen — but the battle lines are already drawn.
