Aimed at transforming India into a global sports powerhouse, the new policy focuses on grassroots development, elite training, economic growth, and social inclusion.
New Delhi, July 1- The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the long-awaited National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, setting in motion a bold and ambitious plan to transform India’s sports landscape. Replacing the outdated 2001 framework, this new policy outlines a visionary roadmap to prepare India for success on the global stage, particularly with an eye on the 2036 Olympic Games.
NSP 2025 is structured around five strategic pillars: excellence in international sports, economic development through sports, social inclusion, mass participation, and integration of sports in education. The policy seeks to bring systemic change to the sports ecosystem from the ground up while making India a hub for sports excellence and innovation.
The policy emphasizes early talent identification and nurturing through a tiered system that connects grassroots programs to elite training academies. It also aims to modernize infrastructure across both rural and urban areas, boost coaching standards, and make significant investments in sports science, medicine, and technology. An athlete-centric approach will ensure comprehensive support systems, from diet and training to mental health and career guidance.
Recognizing the untapped economic potential in the sports sector, NSP 2025 introduces mechanisms to enhance sports tourism, encourage international event hosting, and strengthen sports equipment manufacturing in India. It promotes startups, entrepreneurship, and increased private sector involvement through CSR, PPP models, and new-age funding options to create a thriving sports economy.
The policy puts special emphasis on using sports as a tool for social development and inclusion. It advocates for increased participation by women, tribal populations, economically weaker sections, and persons with disabilities. It also aims to revive indigenous and traditional Indian sports, ensuring that they are preserved and promoted alongside mainstream sports disciplines.
To cultivate a nationwide sports culture, NSP 2025 envisions turning sports into a people’s movement. This includes launching mass participation campaigns, introducing fitness indices in schools and workplaces, and expanding access to community sports facilities for all age groups. By fostering fitness and competition as a way of life, the policy hopes to create a stronger, healthier India.
One of the significant alignments of NSP 2025 is with the National Education Policy 2020, which supports the integration of sports into school curricula. The policy recommends training educators and coaches at the school level to provide structured, age-appropriate sports education, laying the foundation for young athletes from early stages.
To ensure accountability and measurable outcomes, the policy is backed by a strategic implementation framework. It includes setting up robust governance structures, using artificial intelligence and data analytics for performance tracking, and implementing a national monitoring system with defined time-bound goals and benchmarks. This will ensure that policy directives are not only well-conceived but also effectively executed.
NSP 2025 is intended to serve as a guiding document for states and union territories, encouraging them to align their local policies with national objectives. It also advocates for a whole-of-government approach, encouraging every ministry and department to embed sports promotion in their programs, thereby ensuring holistic development and long-term impact.
With this comprehensive and future-focused policy, the government is signaling its commitment to making India a sporting nation that not only competes at the highest levels but also uses sports as a vehicle for national development and unity.
