TTD says all charges are baseless; highlights reforms, Vedic tradition efforts, and AI-based darshan system
Tirupati | June 21, 2025 Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of the world-famous Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, has issued a strong rebuttal to recent accusations made by its former chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy. In a detailed statement on Friday, the TTD dismissed the allegations as factually incorrect and misleading, asserting that they were an attempt to tarnish the institution’s reputation.
What Were the Allegations?
Former chairman Karunakar Reddy had raised concerns related to:
- Erosion of Vedic traditions
- Mishandling of temple priest welfare
- Issuance of notices to religious mutts
- Lack of transparency in temple administration
In response, the TTD has provided clarifications and evidence countering each claim.
TTD Clarifies on Vedic Traditions
The TTD emphasized that it remains deeply committed to preserving and promoting Vedic culture in Tirumala. Over the past year, the institution claims to have:
- Enhanced Vedic recitation practices
- Expanded the chanting of 'Om Namo Venkatesaya' across queue lines, footpaths, and other public areas in the temple
- Continued support to Vedic students and scholars with welfare schemes
“There is no effort to weaken generations of Vedic tradition,” the TTD said. “On the contrary, we have taken steps to strengthen them.”
Support for Priests and Religious Institutions
Responding to claims that temple priests were not being treated with dignity, the TTD assured that:
- Multiple welfare initiatives for physical and mental wellbeing of priests and students are underway
- Programs include healthcare, educational support, and financial aid
Regarding notices issued to certain religious mutts, including the Visakha Sharada Peetham, the TTD clarified that:
- Notices were issued only in compliance with court directives
- They targeted unauthorised land encroachments, not religious activities
Transparency and Security Post-Parakamani Scandal
The 2023 Parakamani (temple offerings counting) scandal had raised questions about transparency in temple fund management. In response, the TTD said:
- A Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) is now in place
- An armoured security system has been installed
- All personnel entering Parakamani undergo mandatory security screening
“We are committed to restoring trust among devotees,” the statement added.
Reforms to Improve Pilgrim Experience
TTD also highlighted several reforms undertaken in the last year:
- Scientific queue management to reduce wait times
- 22 new food counters and improved Annaprasadam distribution
- Introduction of AI-based darshan management systems for seamless crowd control
- Free beverages and snacks provided to pilgrims during their wait
Devotee Satisfaction Remains High
According to TTD:
- Over 90% of pilgrims expressed satisfaction with services through various feedback channels
- This reinforces the belief that reforms and changes are positively impacting pilgrim experiences
“It is unfortunate that a former Chairman is spreading misinformation instead of verifying facts,” the TTD remarked.
Why This Matters
- TTD manages one of the most visited religious sites in the world, drawing millions of pilgrims annually.
- Allegations involving faith practices, transparency, or priest welfare directly impact public trust.
- The rebuttal highlights the importance of fact-based dialogue in safeguarding the integrity of religious institutions.
As allegations surface against TTD’s functioning, the institution has taken a firm stand in defending its record, backed by reforms, data, and transparent communication. With growing global attention on Tirumala and its management practices, TTD’s credibility and responsiveness remain crucial in preserving both spiritual sanctity and administrative accountability.
