PM Modi Begins Historic First-Ever Visit to Croatia, Receives Grand Welcome in Zagreb
Zagreb, Croatia — June 19, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant diplomatic milestone on Wednesday as he arrived in Zagreb, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Croatia. His arrival was met with a rousing reception from the Indian community and a ceremonial welcome by the Croatian government, underscoring the growing partnership between the two nations.
This visit marks the final leg of Modi’s three-nation tour, which earlier included stops in Cyprus and participation in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
Ceremonial Welcome at Franjo Tudman Airport
In a special gesture, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković personally welcomed PM Modi at Zagreb’s Franjo Tudman Airport, where he was accorded a ceremonial reception.
“This is a special visit, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister to a valued European partner,” PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter). “I am grateful to Prime Minister Andrej Plenković for the warm gesture of receiving me at the airport.”
Plenković noted the visit came at an “important geopolitical moment” and said both countries are now entering a new chapter of bilateral cooperation.
“We are starting a new chapter in Croatia-India relations and creating the conditions for strengthening bilateral cooperation in a number of areas,” Plenković said.
Massive Crowd Greets PM Modi in Zagreb
Modi was welcomed with chants of “Modi-Modi,” “Vande Mataram,” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” as his motorcade made its way through the streets of Zagreb. Members of the Indian diaspora, along with curious locals, gathered in large numbers to greet him.
At his hotel, the Prime Minister was treated to traditional cultural performances and chanting of Vedic shlokas by members of the local Indian community. PM Modi briefly interacted with several people, thanking them for their continued support and presence abroad.
Boosting Bilateral Cooperation Across Key Sectors
In his pre-visit remarks, PM Modi highlighted centuries-old cultural ties between India and Croatia and emphasized that the visit would open up new avenues for cooperation in:
- Trade and investment
- Defence and innovation
- Ports and shipping
- Science and technology
- Workforce mobility and cultural exchange
Analysts say the visit could catalyze stronger political and economic collaboration, especially in emerging sectors like digital infrastructure and green energy.
India-Croatia Relations: A Quick Overview
- Bilateral trade stands at approximately USD 300 million
- Indian investment in Croatia is about USD 48 million
- Croatia and India enjoy strong cooperation in international forums, including the United Nations and EU-India dialogues
- There is active cultural and educational exchange, along with participation in defence and agriculture sectors
The visit builds on previous high-level engagements, including the 2019 state visit by former President Ramnath Kovind, during which he was conferred Croatia’s highest civilian honor, the Grand Order of the King of Tomislav.
Historical and Cultural Ties Run Deep
India and Croatia share historical links dating back centuries. Missionaries from the Principality of Dubrovnik were among the earliest Croatian visitors to India. The Church of Sao Braz in Goa, built around 1563, is believed to have Croatian origins.
These cultural ties have been further enriched by the growing Indian diaspora in Croatia. As of December 2024, around 17,000 Indians were living in the country. Most are short-to-medium term contract workers across various sectors such as hospitality, construction, healthcare, and shipping.
Looking Ahead: Diplomatic and Economic Gains Expected
PM Modi is scheduled to hold talks with Croatian President Zoran Milanović and Prime Minister Plenković during his visit. Key agreements are likely to be signed focusing on:
- Mobility partnerships for skilled Indian professionals
- Collaborative research in AI and biotechnology
- Tourism development and air connectivity
- Defence manufacturing and maritime trade
The Indian government is expected to push for eased visa norms for Indian professionals, especially in the tech and medical sectors.
PM Modi’s historic first visit to Croatia not only deepens diplomatic and strategic ties but also reflects India’s growing global footprint. The enthusiastic reception by the Indian diaspora underscores the emotional and cultural bonds shared between the two nations. As the world watches this pivotal moment, India and Croatia appear poised to chart a stronger, more collaborative future across multiple sectors.
