Panchayat Season 4 Teaser Out: Deepak Kumar Mishra Talks Village Cinematic Universe, Jitendra Kumar Recalls Anxious Start
New Delhi | June 2, 2025 - The much-loved Hindi village drama Panchayat is returning with Season 4, and its teaser has officially dropped. Directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra, the new season is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 2, 2025, promising another dose of heartfelt realism, rustic humour, and grassroots storytelling.
What started as a simple slice-of-life narrative has now evolved into a flagship series for Indian OTT content — and may soon be part of something even bigger.
The Rise of a 'Village Cinematic Universe'?
At the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) held on May 3, Mishra revealed he’s open to the idea of a shared 'village cinematic universe', inspired by the unexpected thematic success of Panchayat and its tonal cousins Dupahiya and the upcoming Gram Chikitsalay, all under the Prime Video banner.
“This wasn’t intentional. But if it happens, then I wouldn’t mind at all. Just like there’s a Marvel Cinematic Universe, there could be a village cinematic universe too,” Mishra said.
He added that whether this potential universe would include character crossovers remains to be seen, but the idea of interconnected yet independent village stories is something he finds exciting.
Authenticity Over Artificiality
During the WAVES session, titled ‘Making of Panchayat: Grassroot Storytelling on Amazon Prime’, Mishra was joined by the show's writer Chandan Kumar and lead actors Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, and Sunita Rajwar.
The director spoke in detail about the conscious decision to keep Panchayat grounded in reality, noting that the series was filmed entirely at real village locations.
“Our mantra was: whenever in doubt, don’t do the right thing — do the real thing,” Mishra said.
He emphasized that authenticity was a non-negotiable part of the show’s DNA, from costumes and props to the dialects and set design. “The goal was always to reflect the India we know and live in — not an idealized or romanticized version,” he added.
Jitendra Kumar: From Unplanned Casting to Iconic Role
Interestingly, Jitendra Kumar, who plays the show's lead Abhishek Tripathi, wasn’t originally supposed to be part of the cast.
“The original concept was closer to The Office, something confined inside a Panchayat building. I wasn’t even considered in the beginning,” Jitendra revealed.
However, once the creators realized the story had to move beyond the walls of the Panchayat office, they needed a relatable, grounded face for the titular Sachiv role — and Jitendra stepped in.
Despite his past experience in comedy, Jitendra said he was initially anxious about his performance in Panchayat due to the show’s subtle tone.
“I wasn’t sure whether the subtler humour would connect. I was worried because I hadn’t done a character like this before. But the TVF team saw the rushes and told me I was on the right track,” he said.
Panchayat’s Cultural Impact and Continued Popularity
Since its debut, Panchayat has become one of Prime Video’s most critically acclaimed and widely watched Indian original series, known for its grounded storytelling, rich characters, and small-town charm.
With Dupahiya already released and Gram Chikitsalay on the horizon, it’s evident that Prime Video is building a robust village drama portfolio — potentially paving the way for the rural shared universe Mishra hinted at.
Fans have praised the show for:
- Avoiding over-the-top drama
- Portraying real-life village issues
- Striking a balance between satire and sincerity
- Delivering unforgettable performances, especially from veteran actors like Raghubir Yadav and Neena Gupta (in earlier seasons)
What to Expect in Season 4?
While the teaser doesn’t give away plot details, it promises a return to Phulera, where Abhishek Tripathi continues to grapple with life, love, and bureaucracy in equal measure. With political dynamics intensifying and interpersonal tensions brewing, Season 4 may take a slightly more dramatic turn while keeping its signature humor intact.
