Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has blocked over 8,000 accounts in India after receiving orders from the Indian government. The move comes after India’s Operation Sindoor, a military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which increased tensions between India and Pakistan.
Operation Sindoor Sparks Digital, Diplomatic, and Cultural Fallout
The crackdown on X accounts is the latest move by the Indian government amid escalating tensions with Pakistan. On Thursday night, Indian forces reportedly thwarted Pakistan’s attempts to attack military establishments in Jammu and Kashmir. The strikes were believed to be in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed several Indian personnel.
India’s Operation Sindoor — a swift and precise military response — has triggered heightened online misinformation campaigns, particularly from across the border. In response, the Centre has taken a firm stance on controlling content that could incite unrest or manipulate public perception.
X said the Indian government’s orders require the platform to restrict accounts, including some belonging to foreign media and popular users. The company also said it may face fines or legal action in India if it doesn’t follow the order.
In a statement, X said,
“We disagree with the Indian government's actions, but have complied to keep the platform accessible in India.”
X also mentioned that it cannot share the official orders due to legal restrictions and is considering legal options.
Meanwhile, India has also ordered all OTT and streaming platforms to stop showing any content from Pakistan, including movies, web series, and music, in the interest of national security.
The government is also working to remove misinformation about recent events being spread online.
