Russia Praises India’s Operation Sindoor, S-400 and BrahMos Performance; Ceasefire Alone Won’t End Ukraine War: Envoy Denis Alipov
New Delhi – In a wide-ranging interview, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov hailed India’s recent counter-terrorism Operation Sindoor, calling the use of Russian-supplied defence systems like the S-400 and BrahMos missiles “exemplary.” He also addressed the complex nature of the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that a ceasefire alone is not the solution, and negotiations must remain the focus.
"No Double Standards on Terrorism": Russia Condemns Pahalgam Attack
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Alipov condemned the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, calling it a “heinous crime” and stressing Russia’s firm support for India in the fight against terrorism.
“President Putin immediately sent condolences to Prime Minister Modi and expressed Russia’s full support. There can be no double standards on terrorism, whether it’s cross-border or otherwise,” said Alipov.
He also pointed to the mutual cooperation between India and Russia at the United Nations, especially in pushing for the adoption of India’s proposed global counter-terrorism convention.
Operation Sindoor: S-400 and BrahMos Deliver “Exemplary” Performance
Ambassador Alipov lauded India’s execution of Operation Sindoor, a strategic mission targeting cross-border terrorist threats, highlighting the key role played by the Russian-origin S-400 air defence system and BrahMos missiles.
“From what we know, India clearly identified targets and took action. The S-400 and BrahMos performed to exemplary standards during the operation,” he said.
The BrahMos missile system, developed under an Indo-Russian joint venture, continues to be a symbol of bilateral defence cooperation. Alipov expressed satisfaction with the weapon’s performance and hinted at future expansion of the collaboration.
“The joint venture has great prospects. We are satisfied and are discussing further expansion of our defence cooperation,” he added.
PM Modi’s Leadership Key to Multipolar World Order
Alipov also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role as a global leader, noting the strong relationship between President Putin and PM Modi.
“There’s no doubt about PM Modi’s global stature. He’s steering India towards global prominence. Both our countries support a multipolar world where no single power dominates,” Alipov stated.
He confirmed that during their recent May 5 conversation, the two leaders reiterated their shared vision for global equity and cooperation.
Putin’s Upcoming Visit and Expanding Diplomatic Ties
On the expected high-level visits, Alipov confirmed ongoing planning for President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India, although no final dates have been announced.
“There will be several visits by Russian and Indian officials this year. The interaction between our foreign ministries is intense and constructive,” he noted.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is also expected to visit New Delhi soon, as both sides continue to deepen their strategic partnership.
Ceasefire in Ukraine Not Enough Without Negotiations
When asked about the prospects for peace in Ukraine, the Russian envoy stressed that a ceasefire alone won’t ensure peace.
“The Ukraine conflict is complex with deep-rooted causes. We have proposed multiple ceasefires, but Ukraine has violated them. A ceasefire without a broader peace agreement is meaningless,” Alipov explained.
He highlighted a recent prisoner exchange as a positive outcome of resumed talks and expressed hope for further negotiations to follow.
“We welcomed Ukraine’s decision to resume talks in Turkey. The prisoner swap was a success. But the main focus must be on ending the war through dialogue, not temporary ceasefires.”
Talks on More S-400s Underway, But No Final Word Yet
On the possibility of India acquiring additional S-400 systems, Alipov confirmed ongoing discussions but refrained from giving specifics.
“Yes, discussions are ongoing, but it’s too early to comment on the outcome,” he said, hinting at potential future defence deals between the two allies.
The interview with Ambassador Denis Alipov reaffirms Russia’s strong support for India on both the counter-terrorism and defence fronts. His comments also reflect the evolving strategic dynamic between New Delhi and Moscow, especially at a time when global geopolitical tensions remain high. As India continues to assert its defence capabilities through missions like Operation Sindoor, partnerships with traditional allies like Russia remain crucial.
