Carlos Alcaraz Advances to Roland Garros Third Round, Hits 20-Win Milestone; Svitolina Shines in Emotional Victory
Paris | May 29, 2025 — Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive run at Roland Garros 2025, defeating Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in four sets to advance to the third round—and notch a historic milestone in the process.
The 21-year-old Spanish sensation recorded a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory under the closed roof of Court Philippe Chatrier, battling through mid-match turbulence and showcasing the type of commanding play that has made him a fan favorite and a top title contender.
But the win was more than just another step in his title defense. Alcaraz became the second-fastest player in the Open Era (since 2000) to reach 20 match wins at Roland Garros, doing so in just 23 matches—a feat surpassed only by his idol and fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the 14-time champion on Parisian clay.
“It was a great, great match,” Alcaraz said after the match. “In the second set, he played really aggressive and didn’t miss at all. It was tough, but I stayed strong and bounced back with confidence.”
Tactical Adjustments Power Comeback
The contest had shades of their 2023 Rome encounter, where Marozsan stunned the then-World No. 1. In Paris, the Hungarian again caused problems—particularly in the second set, using a mix of drop shots, volleys, and tactical angles to disrupt Alcaraz’s rhythm.
However, the third and fourth sets belonged to the reigning champion. Alcaraz fired 41 winners, 19 more than his opponent, and won 71% of points on his first serve, asserting control in just over two hours.
“This court has given me some unforgettable moments,” Alcaraz said of Chatrier. “It’s always special to play here.”
Up next, the World No. 2 faces either France’s wildcard Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur, both posing unique tests in the third round.
Elina Svitolina Reaches Third Round for 10th Time
While Alcaraz thrilled fans with his power and speed, Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina showcased sheer grit and emotional resolve to book her place in the third round for the 10th time in her career.
The former World No. 3 overcame Hungary’s Anna Bondar 7-6(4), 7-5, digging deep in both sets to close out a tightly contested match.
The Ukrainian star was cheered on by her husband, French tennis icon Gael Monfils, whose own five-set marathon the night before seemed to energize her.
“It means a lot to have Gael in the box, especially after his incredible win yesterday,” Svitolina shared. “He inspires me every day. I just wanted to match that energy and give it everything.”
Svitolina’s performance was a reminder of her enduring class and competitive drive, even as the women's draw continues to see fierce competition from emerging stars and returning veterans alike.
Eyes on the Prize
With the second week of Roland Garros fast approaching, Alcaraz and Svitolina remain two of the most compelling narratives at the 2025 French Open. Alcaraz is eyeing a potential title defense that would further cement his legacy on clay, while Svitolina is riding momentum and emotion to once again be a formidable presence in the women's draw.
As the tournament heads into its next phase, fans can expect high drama, more milestones, and the continued rise of next-generation stars.
