PM Modi Hails Historic WHO Pandemic Treaty, Urges Global Unity for Health Reforms
New Delhi, May 20 (TheTrendingPeople): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lauded the adoption of the historic WHO Pandemic Treaty at the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, calling it a shared global commitment to future pandemic preparedness. Addressing the session via video conferencing, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s dedication to inclusive and equitable global healthcare, especially for the Global South.
“One World for Health” – A Vision Aligned with India
Highlighting the theme of this year’s assembly, “One World for Health,” PM Modi said the message strongly echoes India’s holistic approach to global health governance. The treaty, officially adopted after three years of intense global negotiations, seeks to address the inequities and vulnerabilities exposed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The WHO Pandemic Treaty is a shared commitment to fighting future pandemics through greater global cooperation,” the Prime Minister said, congratulating WHO member states on the consensus-driven success of the agreement.
India, which has played a pivotal role in vaccine diplomacy and low-cost medical interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic, is among the signatories of the treaty.
Bridging Healthcare Gaps: India’s Model for the Global South
PM Modi emphasized that while developing countries continue to grapple with health inequities, India’s approach presents a replicable and sustainable healthcare model.
“India’s approach provides replicable, scalable, and sustainable models,” he said, reiterating the country’s commitment to sharing best practices with fellow nations — especially in the Global South.
From vaccine production to telemedicine, India has played a critical role in expanding global healthcare access — a trend the Prime Minister urged other countries to emulate.
Strengthening Domestic Healthcare: From Ayushman Bharat to Digital Solutions
PM Modi also spoke about transformative health reforms in India, citing initiatives like:
- Ayushman Bharat: The world’s largest government-run health insurance scheme, covering 580 million people with free treatment.
- Digital health infrastructure: Improved access and better health outcomes through digital innovation and telehealth platforms.
- Increased Government Health Expenditure: Resulting in a decline in Out-of-Pocket Expenditure for citizens, making healthcare more affordable and inclusive.
- “The health of the world depends on how well we care for the most vulnerable,” PM Modi underlined.
An Inclusive Global Vision: “No One Should Be Left Behind”
With the pandemic revealing deep fissures in the world’s healthcare infrastructure, PM Modi emphasized the need for inclusive, integrated, and collaborative strategies to address future crises.
“The future of a healthy world depends on inclusion, an integrated vision, and collaboration,” he said.
He further reiterated India’s offer to assist other nations with capacity-building, knowledge-sharing, and low-cost healthcare innovations.
International Day of Yoga 2025: 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'
As a symbolic gesture of India’s soft power in promoting global wellness, PM Modi invited the world to join the upcoming 11th International Day of Yoga in June. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” aligns with the shared aspirations of the WHO Pandemic Treaty.
“As the birthplace of Yoga, India invites all nations to join us in celebrating holistic health,” the Prime Minister said.
A Defining Moment in Global Health Policy
With the adoption of the WHO Pandemic Treaty, world governments have taken a crucial step toward ensuring that no country faces a health emergency alone again. As PM Modi noted, this treaty could reshape how the world responds to health emergencies — not just reactively, but proactively and equitably.
As countries begin aligning national strategies with this global framework, India’s contributions — in both thought leadership and practical solutions — are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of global health.
