Itanagar, Sept 16 – The 8th Tang Festival, a celebration of the Sartang community's vibrant culture and traditions, was held with grandeur at the General Ground in Khoina, West Kameng District. The festival, marked by colorful displays and age-old rituals, attracted widespread participation, reflecting the community's deep-rooted heritage.

The event was graced by MLA Tseten Chombay as the Chief Guest, who was joined by MLA Tenzin Nyima Glow as the Guest of Honour. Their presence, along with several local dignitaries, highlighted the importance of the festival for the community.
The Sartang community, one of the smallest tribes in Arunachal Pradesh, boasts a population of around 3,000. Known for following a unique blend of Buddhism and animistic practices, the community holds Salari village as its cultural hub. Despite their small numbers, the Sartangs have managed to preserve their ancient traditions, and the Tang Festival is a significant part of this cultural preservation effort.
The festival featured a series of captivating cultural performances, including traditional dances that showcased the elegance and vitality of Sartang customs. A fashion show displaying traditional attire caught the eye of the attendees, offering a glimpse into the intricate craftsmanship and heritage of the community's clothing. Exhibition stalls added to the festivities, showcasing a variety of traditional materials and crafts, giving visitors a hands-on experience of the community’s artistic heritage.
Local priests conducted time-honored rituals during the event, infusing a spiritual essence into the festival. These rituals, integral to the Sartang way of life, symbolize their connection to their ancestors and the natural world.
Chief Guest Tseten Chombay stressed in his speech the value of protecting the rich cultural heritage of the Sartang people. He praised the efforts of the organizers and expressed admiration for the community’s dedication to keeping their cultural identity alive. He also underscored the role such festivals play in strengthening community bonds and passing down traditions to future generations.
Guest of Honour MLA Tenzin Nyima Glow echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of cultural heritage in fostering unity and pride among the younger generation.
Other dignitaries in attendance included ZPC Karma Dorjee Thongdok, Deputy Commissioner Akriti Sagar, and Superintendent of Police Sudhanshu Dhama, who lent their support to the festival.
The Tang Festival, celebrated annually in September, holds immense significance for the Sartang community. It not only provides an opportunity for the community to come together but also serves as a platform to showcase their unique identity and traditions to the outside world. With each passing year, the festival grows in stature, attracting visitors and strengthening cultural exchange in the region.
