The Essence of Dussehra: Good Conquering Evil
Dussehra symbolizes the triumph of righteousness, with its roots in the victory of Lord Rama over the ten-headed demon king, Ravana. But it has evolved into more than just a mythological celebration; it has become a source of empowerment, particularly for women.
Samreen's Inspiring Journey: From Tragedy to Hope
Samreen's story begins with a tragic event - the loss of her mother due to a lack of timely medical care. Her life and heart were deeply affected after facing this situation. She was sure that no child and no woman should suffer a similar loss as a result of poor healthcare.
As she recalls, "It was possible to save her, but there was no ambulance, no support, no first aid available. Those 45 minutes could have saved her." At the tender age of 11, she lost her mother, and that experience left an indelible mark on her young heart.
The Unwavering Resolve
Samreen's passion for bringing about change in the world remained unbroken in the face of countless challenges. She decided to become a medical healthcare professional, no matter what she studies and what she does. Her journey began early as she reached out to a local doctor, apprenticing at his clinic from a young age. By the time she turned 16, she had gained skills in providing basic first aid knowledge from the Butterflies NGO health program.
Pursuing Her Dream
Though life threw obstacles in her path, Samreen remained determined. Her father's limited resources and her own failed attempt at the NEET examination did not deter her. She found an alternative path - she enrolled in a free paramedic course under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) at Lady Harding Medical College while continuing her distance education from SOL Delhi University.
The Importance of Perseverance
Samreen's story emphasizes the importance of perseverance and determination. She firmly believed that if you're determined enough, you'll find a way to achieve your dreams. She started her career at Medulance as a Staff Nurse after working for a year.
Samreen's Role as a Paramedic, Saving Lives and Fulfilling Dreams
Joining Medulance during the pandemic as an Emergency Paramedic, Samreen embarked on her journey to save lives. Her eyes fill with tears as she recalls her first call - a middle-aged woman having a heart attack but unaware of it. Her training kicked in, and she performed CPR. It was a moment of doubt, but she summoned the strength to try again. This time, the CPR worked, and they managed to stabilize the patient before reaching the hospital. When the doctor told her, she had saved the woman's life, Samreen felt that she had finally succeeded in saving her mother.
Samreen's Achievements
Two years later, Samreen continues her work, proud of her accomplishments. She has become the primary breadwinner for her family. Despite facing challenges as a woman paramedic, including losing some patients and dealing with aggressive family members, she remains undeterred.
The Unfulfilled Dream
While her dream of becoming a doctor may be constrained by her family's financial situation, Samreen holds no regrets. She plans to complete her education, earn a B.Sc in Nursing, and dedicate her life to caring for people.
Samreen's Message
In parting, Samreen smiles and imparts this message: Never lose hope. Keep your hope alive and know what you want to do. I did not have the facilities and faced a lot of trouble, but I always had hope and knew that I would keep working towards my dream of saving lives.
Dussehra's Empowering Spirit for Women
Dussehra extends beyond religious significance; it empowers women, celebrating their courage, resilience, and unwavering spirit. As we celebrate Dussehra, let's draw inspiration not only from the victory of good over evil but also from extraordinary women like Samreen. Their journeys epitomize the essence of Dussehra, proving that when women set their minds to it, they can triumph over adversity and contribute to a more equitable world.
