When one thinks of art, portraits, naturalistic, and abstract paintings come to mind. However, master artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Vincent Van Gogh have overshadowed the beautiful and intricate art Mandala pieces like the 17th century Five Deity Mandala. Lauded by Carl Jung as a practical art therapy, Mandala has Hindu and Buddhist roots where it was used to draw the cosmos and deities. Muskan Chawla, a budding Indian Mandala artist, capitulates this art form's mesmerizing and meditative nature through her artworks.
From a young age, Muskan had been curious about exploring the relationship between art and symmetry. Her explorations led into a rabbit hole of artistic endeavors until she finally discovered her passion for Mandala art. Using her ability to emanate an array of subjects from a single focal point, Muskan has created incredible pieces. The geometric patterns used in Mandalas require intricate delicacy and patience. It represents the philosophy of self-discovery and coming full circle in the events of life. Muskan believes that it symbolizes the whole by an abstract combination of different symbols.
They seem to resonate with something profound in all of us that is beyond cultural barriers. Muskan developed her groundbreaking Mandala series "Prestigious Indian Monuments," which features the 50 best-known historical Indian monuments, after observing the many facets of this artistic medium. She used permanent Sharpie markers to create this luxury series on grainy 1 X 1 Canvas.
On her inspiration for this series, Muskan emphasized the deep
cultural and mathematical significance of Mandala:
I’ve always been fascinated by mandala art ever since I was in school. The art form requires a lot of patience and detailing but it really is worth the time once the final outcome is ready. The symmetry and the minutiae in this art form can never go wrong. When we talk about Indian monuments several mathematical calculations and design principles are used in their making that reflects the rich socio-cultural heritage of the country. They exhibit a great deal of symmetry. I have tried to bring together the beauty and symmetry of our Indian heritage and mandala on a canvas and tried my best to do justice to it.
